Kauai Quarantine Rules Change Again

Hawaii quarantine news today is that there's some relaxation of the mandatory 10-day Kauai quarantine rules beginning on January 5.  Here are the highlights:

  • All visitors or returning residents arriving directly from the mainland must complete the mandatory Kauai COVID quarantine for 10 days
  • Hotels and "bubble resorts" are the only permitted quarantine locations for visitors.  You may not quarantine at a vacation rental.
  • Inter-island travelers will not need to quarantine if they pre-test for COVID-19 before flying to Kauai.   The Kauai quarantine does NOT apply to inter-island travel.  If you are traveling from any of the other Hawaiiian islands, you may take a pre-travel COVID test within 72 hours of travel, receive your negative results by the time you fly, and be exempt from Kauai quarantine requirements.
  • In order to qualify for the inter-island Kauai quarantine exemption, you must have been in the state of Hawaii for at least 72 hours before traveling to Kauai.
  • You can reduce the length of mandatory quarantine by taking a post-arrival COVID test and staying at a "resort bubble" until results are available, typically 3 days

Obviously this presents a very large loophole in the mandatory quarantine.  Rather than completing a 10-day quarantine upon arrival, you may fulfill your Hawaii Safe Travels pre-travel COVID testing requirements, enjoy a visit to one of the other islands, then island-hop to Kauai with another pre-test, and be exmpt from the need to quarantine at a hotel.  It's an interesting change, and if you are planning to visit Kauai and have questions about what you need to do and when you need to do it, please feel free to reach out to us by phone or email.  We're happy to answer questions from our guests or prospective guests.
